Solutions For Snoring | Information And Reviews
Hello….Mary here,
Thank you so much for finding my site. What I think is useful information for you here is more information and personal reviews about the many snoring solutions my husband tried. My hope is that you can get some good information now so you can start to resolve any snoring problem you may be dealing with. I don’t want anyone to go through what we experienced just from snoring.

We both met with a ear, nose, throat Dr so he could understand the full physical and emotional impact my husbands snoring problems were having on us and not to take this lightly. His first recommendations that were not costly were to try self help snoring solutions.
Self Help
- Sleep on your side. The Dr. noted this only works if you snore mildly while sleeping on your back. This option went out the window for us.
- Elevating your head. My husband tried propping up his pillow about 4 inches I’d say. Usually this reduces snoring by helping to relax the jaw and throat muscles. But this didn’t work the first night he tried it. Actually his snoring got louder.
- Sleep with no pillow. He tried this so his neck muscles weren’t crimped but it was very uncomfortable. And neither of us could sleep.
- Lose weight. The Dr. said for all of the snoring solutions in the market this was priority #1 since he was overweight. The fatty deposits in his throat is one of the biggest causes of snoring in overweight people. Fat narrows the throat and makes it weak. My job was to force him back to Weight Watchers.
None of these recommended self help stop snoring suggestions did the trick. Except I had to try and get my husband back on his weight loss program.
The otolaryngologist next suggestion was for my husband to take a “Sleep Study”. This ended up being an expensive and time consuming evaluation but we thought it would be worth it. Hopefully the results would define the best snoring solutions he could try.
Sleep Study (Polysomnogram – PSG)
The Dr. wanted to rule out sleep apnea so my husband was prescribed a sleep study to determine if his snoring problem was the
result of something else. He was required to stay overnight at St. Joseph’s Hospital on 4 successive Sat. night. And avoid caffeine and alcohol prior to testing. A lot is involved with the sleep study but basically, he was hooked up to electrodes, had a microphone placed down near his throat to record snoring, and wore a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) mask to direct air throw his nose. If you want to read more about a “Sleep Study” you can Go Here. Of all the tests, this was the most expensive and time consuming. And nothing came from it except that he did not have sleep apnea.
At this point, we started to do our own research for snoring solutions and give them a try. But he made sure to check with the Dr. before trying them which we thought would be a good idea. The first snoring remedy he tried was a throat spray.
Throat Sprays
The throat sprays are supposed to keep the back of the throat lubricated, hence stopping the throat from vibrating. At the start, this did quiet the snoring a little bit. But as the night wore on, the spray lubrication wore off and his snoring was louder than ever. We spent about $50 trying 3 different throat sprays but gave up when it was obvious it did not work.
Mouthpiece Devices
Another of the snoring solutions recommended to him was to use a mouthpiece or dental device. You can get these at a pharmacy or online. This anti snoring device fits over your teeth. It’s purpose was to help pull the lower jaw forward and open up the airways. He got one for $185 and after one night did not like it as it was uncomfortable. He then got the dentist to produce a custom fit anti snoring aid mouthpiece but it cost $300 not covered by dental insurance. Neither device completely stopped his snoring and both were very uncomfortable and kept him from sleeping well.
Jaw Supporter
The next of the snoring solutions the Dr. recommended was a jaw supporter. It is a strap supporter that wraps under your jaw up both sides of our face and over your head. That anti snoring solution is supposed to keep the lower jaw in an upward position, opening up the airway and reduce throat tissue vibration. After spending $90 for it, my husband said it was the most uncomfortable device yet. Worse than the mouthpiece.
At this point, I was becoming frustrated! Nothing was working to stop his snoring problem and I wasn’t getting any better sleep. We were both still having to sleep in separate bedrooms.
But a girlfriend of mine from my scrapbooking group told she and her husband had just gone through the same thing. She told me about some very simple and easy snoring solutions my husband should try. They would over time end his snoring and was considered a long term solution. They were the key to keeping my girlfriend and her husband’s marriage together.
I am a bit tired from writing and will continue soon about the easy snoring solutions that stopped my husband’s snoring for good.
